Description:

Avolac Oral Solution contains Lactulose, which is classified as a laxative and is used to treat constipation characterized by infrequent bowel movements and hard, dry stools. Additionally, it is prescribed for hepatic encephalopathy, a condition where liver disease leads to a decline in brain function, causing symptoms such as confusion, tremors, and decreased consciousness, which may progress to hepatic coma.

Avolac Oral Solution is not recommended for patients with serious genetic disorders like galactosemia, acute inflammatory bowel disease, bowel blockage (apart from regular constipation), gastrointestinal perforation, or stomach pain of unknown origin. During the treatment with Avolac Oral Solution, it is essential to stay well-hydrated by consuming about 6 to 8 glasses of fluids daily.

Before taking Avolac Oral Solution, inform your doctor if you have lactose intolerance, diabetes, or Roemheld syndrome. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use Avolac Oral Solution with caution, only if specifically advised by their doctor. While it is generally not recommended for infants and young children, there might be certain circumstances where your child's doctor may prescribe it.

Elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) should take Avolac Oral Solution with caution, and their doctor may monitor their blood electrolyte levels if the medicine is used for an extended period, especially in patients with poor general health.

Indication of Avolac Oral Solution
Pharmacology

Lactulose is a type of laxative that promotes peristalsis in the colon by creating an osmotic effect, leading to increased water retention and distention. This stimulates bowel movements and helps alleviate constipation.

In the context of hepatic encephalopathy, lactulose has an additional mechanism of action. It works by reducing the absorption of ammonium ions and other toxic nitrogenous compounds in the colon. These substances are byproducts of protein metabolism, and in liver disease, particularly in hepatic encephalopathy, the liver may not be able to adequately remove these toxins from the bloodstream. This can lead to elevated blood ammonia concentrations, which can contribute to the neurological symptoms seen in hepatic encephalopathy.

Lactulose helps lower blood ammonia levels by drawing ammonia from the bloodstream into the colon, where it is converted into ammonium ions. The presence of ammonium ions in the colon causes an acidic environment, which favors the conversion of ammonia (NH3) into ammonium (NH4+). Ammonium ions are less readily absorbed by the intestines, reducing the overall ammonia load in the blood.

By reducing blood ammonia concentrations, lactulose can improve the symptoms associated with hepatic encephalopathy, such as confusion, tremors, and decreased level of consciousness. It is an essential part of the management and treatment of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver disease.

  • The use of this medicine with cardiac glycosides like digitalis (used for the treatment of heart failure) can increase the effect of the glycosides by causing potassium deficiency.
